Hey guys and welcome to my VERY first Substack introduction. I want to start this post by saying I am super excited to be here; this feels weird, beautiful, and fresh. This reminds me of the good old blogging days when I would tinker around on my Blogspot blog and share every little thought that came to my mind. Ahh… those were the days…
The only difference between now and then is that I am no longer 22 years old BUT I am a whopping 33-year-old with an entire career and (new life) ahead of me. Now that I think about it, a lot truly has changed since the emergence of those blogging days. And that change is called Social Media. Yup, I blame the shift of blogging on social media (and Youtube)….
I too was once a blogger who would spend hours sharing my thoughts across the internet, editing photos, and sharing what I wrote across my Google+ profiles. However, once social media started to take off (IG Reels, TikTok, Youtube Videos), etc, I truly started to lose focus. I found myself spending hours making videos on platforms that I hardly ever enjoyed. Why was I doing these things? It’s because I thought it would help my blog grow when in reality it just caused a lot of stress on my mental health. It wasn’t until Covid that I realized I needed to focus on my passion…. and that was writing.
And how did I decide on writing/copywriting becoming a career you ask? Well, the answers are simple yet complex. All of my life I have been a straight A+++ student but my FAVORITE subject has always been reading and writing.
Does anyone else remember those readathons? Yeah, I was the queen and won every single time lol!
However, even though I had a strong love of reading, I had a stronger passion for something else as well… and that was dance. As long as I can remember I have always wanted to be a dancer. I swear it was just in my DNA. So as soon as I graduated high school I moved to Texas and started to pursue my dreams of becoming a professional modern dancer. Fast forward lots of tears, sweat, and amazing connections I graduated with my A.A in Dance and turned right back around to continue my education with a B.A. in Dance Studies. As you can see, this was the longest career passion that I had ever stuck to. I was full of life, passionate, and ready to be on Broadway. However, something tragic happened… and it’s called growing up.
After about a year post-grad, I spent a lot of time nurturing my blog and trying to “make something happen” from my little space on the internet. However, after focusing on this project for 3 years, and living life without a real job I decided It was time to take my copywriting/blogging niche to the next level. So I did what ANY almost 30-year-old black woman would do. I applied to graduate school.
Yes, the age-old tale of going back to school when life is throwing you lemons lol. But none the less, it would turn out to be the best decision of my life. While in graduate school, I took on a small internship in a marketing department. From there I learned the back end of marketing, social media management and copywriting. Of course, all of these skills are important but copywriting is what I fell in love with the most. During my internship I learned everything I needed to know and studied like a maniac. I was writing every single day perfecting and sharpening my skillset.
Fast forward three years later, I am working for myself full time and I could not be happier. I love, love writing and that is one of the reasons I decided to open my Substack. Little Free Writer is all about me writing freely about my experiences as an entrepreneur navigating a space that is perfectly aligned with my life and goals.
